100 firefighters tackle flames at Goodyear Dunlop offices

Fire crews were damping down almost 12 hours after a blaze ripped through the ventilation system of an office block in Castle Bromwich.

Staff could still not access the headquarters of international tyre firm Goodyear Dunlop early on Friday morning following the fire which started at about 8pm last night (18th February).

More than 100 firefighters, many wearing breathing apparatus, tackled the blaze at the company’s premises in Wingfoot Way, close to The Fort shopping centre.

Nearby residents and workers at neighbouring industrial units were advised to stay clear and keep windows closed while crews battled the flames. Workers were also evacuated from the nearby Jaguar Land Rover plant in Castle Bromwich.

Firefighters used a hydraulic platform to rise above flames seeping from a ventilation system close to the top of the multi-storey block.

The seat of the blaze was in a warehouse situated next to the office block. Flames could be seen several miles away.

No tyres were caught up in the fire at the building, which was used to store car parts.

The fire was confined to an area of the building housing administrative staff. An investigation into the cause has been launched.

No injuries were reported.
