Amelia and Pete set for Oxford as Solihull Sixth Form College hails superb crop of A-level results
Two students are heading to their dream places at Oxford after helping Solihull Sixth Form College to achieve an excellent year of A-Level results.
The college scored 534 starred grades, classed as A* at A-Level and CACHE qualifications and distinction* at BTEC level.
Amelia-Anne Carse and Pete Miller achieved a clean sweep of A* grades in their A-Levels to secure places at Oxford studying Engineering and English Language and Literature respectively.
For Amelia, 18, from Hampton-in-Arden, her A* grades came in A-Level Mathematics, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics. This has earned her a place at Oriel College to study Engineering.
The former Heart of England School pupil said, “I’ve done better than I was expecting and it’s worth it now for all the stress I had in making an Oxbridge application.
“I had always considered applying to Oxford, so I visited Oriel College and fell in love with it! I really liked the style of teaching and the general nature of the engineering course.
“I also just wanted to see whether I could do it, but it was a huge commitment. I’m looking forward to starting now. Getting these grades gives me confidence for the challenge ahead.”
Former Langley School student Pete, 18, from Solihull, secured his place at Mansfield College after achieving A* grades in A-Level English Literature, Fine Art and History.
He said: “I’m very excited about going to Oxford. Going into the process, I felt like going to Oxford was only ever a dream that wouldn’t actually happen to me. I was scared, because I knew I really wanted to go and that the competition was fierce, but I was also surprised at how much I enjoyed it all.
“I’m going to be able to study a lot of poetry there, which I love and it’s a very friendly place. I met one of the tutors when I visited and she was great and the College has excellent links with Mansfield College too, which is good.”
The majority of students at Solihull Sixth Form College choose to advance to university across a huge variety of subjects, from Law and Medicine to Architecture and Engineering and many more.
Among the headline statistics this year, 257 students achieved all top grades at advanced level (A/A* at A Level and CACHE Diploma or Distinction/Distinction* at BTEC).
The number of students getting A*-B grades is up 143 on this time last year. In addition, 663 students achieved all A*-C grades at A-Level and CACHE Diploma or Merit and above at BTEC. 26 advanced level courses have achieved a 100% pass rate, with success also achieved on BTEC courses, the results of which were confirmed last month.
Principal Martin Sullivan is pleased to see the high level of support the College has given these students paying off.
Mr Sullivan said: “Making an Oxbridge application is a massive challenge, requiring not only high levels of attainment, but also a gruelling interview process.
“They are going up against some of the top minds not only in the UK, but from around the world, so getting an offer is an achievement in itself. Having them overcome the pressure to achieve the required grades is brilliant news.
“I want to congratulate all our students and our staff for excellent results across the board. I’m delighted to see significant improvements, including 118 more starred grades and 200 more students achieving all A*-C or Merit and better in their A-Level, CACHE and BTEC courses, compared to last year.
“Of course, the most important thing is helping our students to progress onto a positive destination and these results will ensure they do that.”
