Man sentenced for breaching Solihull Council’s car cruise injunction

A 28-year-old man has been handed a suspended prison sentence for breaching a car cruising injunction in Solihull.

Sam Jones, from Kingsbury, was caught participating in car cruising, an activity where drivers meet on the public highway causing danger or nuisance to the public.

Mr Jones is thought be have been travelling at 115mph when he was pulled over by police on Bickenhill Parkway on 25 August 2019.

The area is covered by a Car Cruise Injunction Order, which was granted on 18 August 2016, and prohibits any person from participating in a car cruise within the Solihull borough.

Mr Jones admitted to the breach, along with a further breach earlier that day in the Lindrige Road Bridge and Bassetts Pole area, and was convicted at Coventry Combined Court in the High Court at a hearing on 26 August 2019.

Presiding over the case, HHJ Mithani QC sentenced Mr Jones to 20 weeks imprisonment, suspended for a period of 12 months. Mr Jones was also ordered to pay Solihull Council £779.

Cllr Alison Rolf, Cabinet Member for Stronger & Safer Communities, said: “This is a fantastic result for the Council and for local residents. It sends a clear message that breaches of court orders are viewed seriously and will not be tolerated.

“Car cruising is not just a minor nuisance, it demonstrates a disregard for the wellbeing and safety of others. This reckless and dangerous behaviour endangers other road users and members of the public and is not something we are prepared to put up with in Solihull.

“Where groups or individuals flout these rules we will take enforcement action and prosecute.”
