Shirley partners sign ‘PowerGen’ agreement to develop masterplan

Solihull Council, Shirley Advance and ASDA have signed an initial undertaking to work together to bring forward a masterplan for the redevelopment of the former ‘PowerGen’ site at the junction of Stratford Road and Haslucks Green Road in Shirley.

Having now successfully delivered the £85m Parkgate development in Shirley Town Centre, Shirley Advance will take the lead on evolving the masterplan with planned public exhibitions in September.

The current vision is for a predominantly high density residential scheme including a accommodation for the elderly on this high-profile gateway site in Shirley.

Robert Birch of Shirley Advance said:

“It’s great that we are finally in a position to work with the Council and ASDA. It has been an eyesore for far too long but, as we have said many times before, nothing was going to happen until Parkgate was finished.

“We are keen to deliver the best possible scheme at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Councillor Ian Courts, Solihull’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Land, said:

“The landowners are now working together to create a viable masterplan for this important site in Shirley and this is great news for the community. Parkgate has shown the serious appetite for investment in Shirley and I’m sure the final PowerGen scheme will build on its success.

“I’m also very much looking forward to a new name for the scheme, so that we can respectfully banish ‘PowerGen site’ to the dustbin of history.”

Doug Wilson, Head of UK Property Communications at ASDA, said:

“We are pleased that we are now working with partners to deliver another important site in Shirley town centre. Parkgate is a fantastic addition to Shirley and we are looking forward to bringing another high-quality scheme to this vibrant part of Solihull Borough.

“We will now move forward and begin a dialogue with stakeholders and local residents to develop a masterplan we can all be proud of.”
