Breast surgeon Ian Paterson sentenced to 15 years for wounding

A former Birmingham and Solihull based breast surgeon, found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent, has today been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Ian Paterson was convicted of carrying out needless breast operations last month and faced a maximum life sentence.

He was also found guilty of three counts of unlawful wounding against 10 private patients following a seven week trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

It is thought the 59-year-old, from Altrincham in Greater Manchester, carried out the operations for ‘obscure motives’ which may have included a desire to ‘earn extra money’.

Sentencing him at Nottingham Crown Court, the judge said Paterson’s arrogance has contributed to complete lack of remorse.

Mr Paterson had his head down as the judge read through the offences.
