Catholic priest from Solihull cleared of indecently assaulting schoolgirl
A Catholic priest from Solihull has been cleared of indecently assaulting an 11-year-old girl.
Father Edward Simpson, of Olton Friary, was accused of committing the offence at the home of a devout Catholic family in the mid-1980s.
The woman had claimed Simpson, routinely known as Father Ted, groped her beneath her top and put part of his hand into the waist band of her skirt.
A jury at Birmingham Crown Court cleared the retired 85-year-old of one charge of indecent assault after a trial.
After the verdict was returned, Judge Sybil Thomas attacked the police for failing to interview “first-hand” witnesses over the allegation.
“The court is concerned about the investigation or rather the lack of it,” she said.
“I do not have to spell out matters canvassed in evidence.
“But the prosecution has a duty not only to disclose matters that are supportive of its case but also matters that are not.”
