First waste disposal unit in Solihull given the go ahead

A new waste disposal facility is set to be built in Solihull – the unit will be at the Meriden Quarry site off Cornets End Lane.

It will be capable of processing waste water and up to 45,000 tonnes of food, green and wood waste every year.

A spokesman for Beechwood Recycling, the company that will build and operate Solihull’s first food waste processing unit, said: “This project is a huge boost for Solihull’s recycling efforts.

“It will recover value from local waste in a way which is sustainable and beneficial to the environment.

“We have been working hard over the past year to develop a proposal that delivers for the local area, and were delighted councillors recognised this by granting planning permission.

“We are keen to get started and look forward to working for a greener Solihull.

“Lack of treatment capacity within the borough has meant that the council has had significant challenges in progressing towards its goal of reaching a 60 per cent recycling rate by 2020.

“It is hoped that the new development will provide a major boost for the local area.”

The spokesman added: “The site will feature state-of-the-art in-vessel composting, biomass en-ergy and waste water treatment facilities, which will provide an opportunity for locals to learn more about recycling.

“The renewable energy provided by the biomass plant, which will treat wood waste, is sufficient to power the entire development.”
