Good Samaritan helps police catch suspected dangerous off-road bike rider following collision in Dorridge

Off-road bikes have been seized by police after a Good Samaritan helped catch a suspected dangerous rider who fled following a collision in Dorridge.

West Midlands Police has praised the member of the public who made a citizen’s arrest after a pedestrian was hit by one of the bikes.

Two off-road bikes are believed to have been causing a nuisance in Station Road just after 12.15pm on Sunday (10th July) and one of them struck a 54-year-old woman who was walking on the pavement.

Passers-by rushed to the aid of the woman who suffered a fractured foot and bruising and an 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

The other rider, aged 19, tried to flee the area but was detained by the Good Samaritan just off Station Road until officers arrived; they were both arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and bailed as further enquiries continue.

Police in Solihull have led a crackdown on the nuisance of off-road bikes over the last few months.

Chief Inspector Jack Hadley, from Solihull Police, praised the actions of the man who helped to detain the suspect.

He said: “This is a great example of active citizenship and working with the police to make our communities safer.

“West Midlands Police rely on the support of communities in both telling us when someone is up to no good but, on occasions, taking action. This was a perfect example of working together to ensure we can make an arrest.

“This incident highlights the dangers posed by off-road bikes – to the public as well as the riders themselves.

“We have already taken action to seize bikes being ridden in an anti-social manner and have carried out a series of pre-planned operations.

“We want to reassure the people of Solihull we understand their concerns and take unacceptable behaviour extremely seriously. More arrests are coming over the next few weeks.”
