Great Solihull Fairtrade Cake-Off Competition

On Saturday 4th March, Solihull’s home-bakers are being challenged to show off their most delicious baked creations as they compete against each other.

The baking bonanza will be held in the gallery at The Core.

Entry is free and all ages are welcome to take part.

There are a number of categories to enter, from cup-cakes and family favourites to show stoppers – all of which have to include at least two Fairtrade ingredients.

The judging panel will include Steven Hearn, Head Chef at Hampton Manor, as well as Amari Koryang, winner of CBBC Bake Off 2015.

Councillor Tony Dicicco, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and Partnerships, said: “This is another great Fairtrade event, getting the message about sustainable food, local shopping and food production out to the community.

“We hope that everyone who takes part enjoys it as much as I’m sure the judges will.”

A number of special prizes will be up for grabs for the best bakers who use Fairtrade ingredients with imagination – including afternoon tea at Hampton Manor.

The drop-off time for competing cakes is between 11am and 12 noon, with judging taking place between 12 and 1pm.

Solihull was awarded Fairtrade Borough status in 2010.

‘Fair trade’ is the concept behind a global change movement working to get a better deal for farmers and workers. This means better prices, appropriate working conditions and fair terms of trade for the people cultivating the important produce we all use every day. It is represented in the UK by the Fairtrade Foundation.
