Mayor officially opens new Fab Lab Solihull

Local young people enrolled at Solihull’s Fab Lab showed off their new skills during a visit from the Mayor this week.

Fab Lab Solihull, based within Chelmsley Wood Library, gives people aged 15-29 who are not in employment, education or training the chance to unleash their creativity on new innovative technology.

Participants have the chance to use 3D printers, design and personalise products such as mouse mats, phone cases and t-shirts, learn basic coding as well as carving and engraving with a CNC router.

They receive four weeks of free tutoring on how to use the technology, after which they receive advice about how they can progress their own business or career aspirations.

This week, the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Mike Robinson officially opened the new facilities and got the chance to speak to two of the young people involved as well as see the equipment in action. He was also presented with a 3D printed souvenir made by the students.

He said: “I’m really impressed with what I have seen – this is a fantastic opportunity for young people across our borough to get free access to some cutting edge technology.

“This is just what young people need to bring their creative ideas to life and perhaps give them that kick start they need to go on to further training or employment.”
