Photographer hailed a hero for rescuing woman from Solihull canal

A 31-year-old photographer has been hailed a hero by police after she rescued a drowning woman from a Solihull canal.

Verity Milligan performed the life-saving act on a freezing December day back in 2012. Her morning had begun with a stroll along the canal near to Richmond Road in Olton, where she planned to capture the beauty of a winter’s sunrise – but her day took a dramatic turn when she spotted a woman in difficulties in the water.

She immediately dialled 999 to alert emergency services.

In the short amount of time it took police and a paramedic first responder to arrive Verity had managed to drag the woman to the safety of the canal towpath.

Commenting on Verity’s heroism, Chief Superintendent Sally Bourner, said: “Emergency services who arrived at the scene were all in agreement that the near freezing temperatures could have claimed the life of the lady if it wasn’t for Verity’s actions.

“It was a selfless act that was fuelled by strength and courage, embodying a human spirit that can often be triggered during times of crisis. By risking her own life she was able to save the life of a vulnerable lady suffering from mental health issues.”

Verity was awarded a Chief Constable’s Good Citizens Award at a ceremony held Wednesday 14th May.
