Solihull Mayor meets local cancer support group

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Stuart Davis recently attended one of the monthly meetings of the Solihull Prostate Cancer Support Group to offer support to members.

Prostate Cancer UK is one of the Mayor’s chosen charities for the year, and when he was contacted by the group’s chairperson, he was delighted to attend with the Mayoress Mrs Sarah Walker.

With prostate cancer affecting 1 in 8 men in the UK, the Mayor is committed to raising awareness of this illness and encouraging men to seek support sooner.

The Mayor said: “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer men suffer from in the UK. Therefore raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of this disease is crucial, and is one of the reasons why Prostate UK is one of my nominated charities.

“It was really heart-warming to attend the group’s meeting and see how local people who have been affected by the illness are offering support to each other.”

The support group was established in 2006 and supports sufferers alongside their partners, both throughout and post treatment.

To date the group have raised £17,500 towards purchasing specialist equipment alongside covering service costs to support men affected.

The Mayor offered words of encouragement to attendees while Mrs Maya Harris a consultant urologist (Warwick NHS hospital and the Nuffield hospital Leamington Spa) gave a presentation to the group.
