Solihull Mayor’s new Sea Scout appointed

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Mike Robinson, has received his first salute from the Mayor’s new Sea Scout, Katie Russell.

It’s a long standing tradition that a scout from the 4th Knowle Sea Scout Group has held this special position; joining the Mayor on official events including full council, citizenship ceremonies, Remembrance Sunday, ANZAC Day and a variety of community and charity events.

Katie, an Explorer Scout, has been chosen as this year’s representative.

During her time with the group she has achieved several awards, the most recognisable being the Chief Scout Gold Award and the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

She is currently working towards her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and hopes to complete the Gold Award in the future.

In her 7 years with the group Katie has attended numerous camps, the most recent of which being a week aboard HMS Bristol. Katie has also participated in many activities including various water sports as well as completing exhibitions including the Six Summit Challenge.

Currently completing her A-Levels, she is also an active member and demonstrator with Learning Curves Dance.

The Mayor said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to have met Katie and I very much look forward to her joining the Mayoress and myself on a number of our official duties.

“Most importantly I hope she enjoys the experience and gets to see some of the great work going on within the borough.”
