Solihull pupils inspired to raise money for disabled sportspeople

Pupils at a Solihull school have been inspired to raise funds for disabled sportspeople after receiving a visit from a local wheelchair athlete.

Kare Adenegan’s life changed when she took up wheelchair racing just eighteen months ago and she is now ranked as number two in Great Britain – second only to gold medallist and Paralympian Hannah Cockroft. She has also been ranked as the fifth fastest sprinter in the world.

Pupils at Eversfield Preparatory School recently met with the 13-year-old and have been inspired to raise more money for people like Kare.

Kare’s father Bunmi Adenegan visited the school to show the children Kare’s sports wheelchair which was provided by Caudwell Children and cost £6,000.

After the children were told each athlete would need up to five wheelchairs during their career, the pupils were spurred on to raise further funds for the charity. Jenny Dredger, registrar at the school, said: “Eversfield Preparatory School is delighted to be supporting Caudwell Children’s charity, which offers young people with disabilities or serious illness the opportunity to take part in sport through the provision of mobility and sensory equipment.”

The students will be taking part in a number of fundraisers, including non-uniform day and a cake sale.

The children have also been given £5 each form the headmaster Robert Yates, to come up with something creative to raise extra money.

“This one has really got everyone talking,” Ms Dredger said.

“After retelling the new testament’s Parable of The Talents in which a man entrusted three servants with talents or money and hoped that they would increase them by the time he had returned from his journey, the headmaster surprised his form six pupils by presenting them each with £5 last week.

“He then asked them to use their talents to raise as much money as possible for their chosen charity.

“In a similar exercise last year, pupils aged 10 and 11 years increased an initial sum of £180 more than ten-fold to over £2,000 for charity.

“This year’s pupils are just as eager to succeed and we wish them well with their enterprises, which will include car washes, garage, sweet and cakes sales and much more.”
