Solihull schools go ‘bananas’ for Fairtrade Fortnight

On Friday 10th February, a number of Solihull schools visited Solihull Council’s Civic Suite to present their Fairtrade banana artwork, which will form part of the upcoming Fairtrade Trail in the town centre.

Children from the Triple Crown Centre, Valley, Castle Bromwich, St Alphege, Merstone, Coleshill Heath and Sharmans Cross schools created the banana artwork ahead of Fairtrade Fortnight – which takes place between Monday 27th February and Sunday 12th March.

At the event, Deputy Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Glenis Slater, highlighted the importance of supporting Fairtrade and commended the children on their banana masterpieces.

The Deputy Mayor said: “It’s fantastic to see so many schools in our borough teaching future generations about how important it is to support Fairtrade.

“Solihull has Fairtrade Borough Status and this is something we are very proud of. Valley Primary School has also been recognised with a FairAware schools award for their excellent understanding of Fairtrade and use of Fairtrade products.

“This event was a lovely way to celebrate the effort that has gone into the children’s banana creations. These will be on display around the town centre – so keep your eyes peeled!”

The trail involves hunting down the banana artwork around the town centre and using clues to crack a Fairtrade code.

It will be taking place between Saturday 18th February and Saturday 4th March and trail sheets can be downloaded from the Solihull Council website or collected from either the Touchwood information desk or The Core library.
