Two historic Olton buildings listed

Two historic buildings in Olton have been added to the National Heritage List as Grade ll listed buildings.

The Church of the Holy Ghost and Mary Immaculate and the Olton Friary building at St Bernard’s Road have both been listed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport following an assessment by Historic England.

They are prominent buildings in Olton Conservation Area, with an enclosed and tranquil cemetery to their south – an illustration of the development of Olton and architecture of the Roman Catholic Church in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The historic buildings were recently added to Solihull Council’s Local List of Heritage Assets and have now received this recognition of their national significance.

Councillor Tony Dicicco, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities & Partnerships, said “It’s great that two more of our buildings have been recognised as worthy of protection.

“The Church is a beautiful piece of architecture and the mosaics and carvings inside the building are incredibly intricate.

“I hope that more of the borough’s important historical and architectural buildings will be recognised and protected.”
