Community ‘scrums’ together to clean up care scheme’s gardens

Greenhill Way Extra Care in Shirley received the first step in a transformation of its gardens thanks to members of the community who joined forces to clean it up.

Members of Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club, Solihull Police, Greenhill Way Street Association and Solihull Council teamed up to spruce up the gardens for the elderly residents of the scheme.

The garden had previously been badly overgrown and the residents were unable to keep it in check.

Thanks to donations and support from Homebase, Asda and Selco the residents will now be able to enjoy the area.

As well as cutting back bushes and the shrubs, an area of the garden is being paved to put a new table and chairs in and a small vegetable patch has been dug so the green-fingered residents can try their hand at growing their own food.

Cllr Karen Grinsell, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care & Health and Ward Councillor for Shirley East, said “The residents at Greenhill Way Care didn’t really use the garden before, they aren’t able to look after the trees and the bushes but hopefully they will now be able to take full advantage of this great space.

“I’d like to say a really big thank you to all the people who’ve given up their time and particularly the boys from Birmingham Moseley rugby club who lent their much needed strength to do the heavy-lifting.”

The Greenhill Way Extra Care scheme provides 24/7 support to allow those who still wish to live independently are able to do so, safe in the knowledge that care is available if required.
