Restaurant chain has donated a thousand sandbags to Britain’s flood-hit communities
After seeing the devastating effect of the floods on the news, Ranjit Choongh, head of operations at Jimmy Spices, decided it was time to help.
On 14th February he asked staff at the restaurant chain, which has branches including Solihull Town Centre and the NEC, to dig deep and by the following day, they had generously collected £500 for the cause. This was matched by the company who were able to buy more than £1,000 worth of sandbags from D. Gill Building Supplies at a discounted price.
“I was watching the news late Thursday night and the headlines were about the floods down south and the terrible storms,” Mr Choongh explained. “The main message was that we do not have enough sandbags. Some councils are refusing or failing to supply them to local residents and some councils are even charging for them. We are very fortunate that we live in the Midlands where we escape the majority of the bad weather and natural disasters. “Jimmy Spices is also very fortunate to be a successful business and an integral part of the local community and to be in a position to be able to afford to donate towards the efforts down south.”
Ten tonnes of sand have now been delivered by Mr Choongh to a depot in Ashford, Surrey, to prevent further damage to people’s livelihoods. At last count, 5,800 properties had been flooded following the wettest January on record.
