Man who sparked bomb squad search and homes evacuation admits firearms offences

A man who caused homes to be evacuated and sparked a search by the army bomb squad has admitted firearms offences.

Officers found bullets and a gun when they stopped Luke Reilly’s car on Solihull Bypass on 4th November after they were alerted to suspicious items in his house on Garretts Green Lane, Sheldon.

Police had ordered several residents to leave their homes as the army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit conducted a forensic search of the property. A cordon was also put in place for a number of hours.

Several items including a black pistol and ammunition were recovered from Reilly’s rented room.

Reilly, 29, pleaded guilty today to firearms offences at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday and will be sentenced on 1st March.

Chief Superintendent Kenny Bell, commander at Birmingham East police , said: “Experts examined and test fired the handmade gun. It was found to be a viable firearm and therefore a lethal weapon in the wrong hands.

“Thankfully this gun and ammunition have been taken off the city’s streets and can no longer pose a danger to the public.

“The search of the Sheldon property caused concern to the other occupants of the address as well as those people who were also evacuated. I would like to thank them for their understanding and hope they are reassured by Reilly’s admission today.

“Unlicensed firearms are a danger to the public in the wrong hands, this is why West Midlands Police has taken steps with the recent firearms surrender to remove them from public circulation.”

Locals spoke of their concerns during the bomb disposal drama.

One said: “Neighbours have all been evacuated as they have found something in a house there – there are loads of police.

“A friend of mine lives on the road and she told me the inspector knocked on her door and said had to leave the property.”

Information about anyone who has access to lethal weapons should be reported to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or police on 101.
