Knowle Library’s courtyard scheme launched

The proposals to improve Knowle Library’s courtyard will be on show within the library from 1st to 15th December.

On Saturday 8th December, from 10am until 1pm, members of the Knowle Society and library staff will be on hand to talk to local people and library users about the plans.

The project to transform the courtyard is being driven by Solihull Council working in partnership with the Knowle Society.

Following a feasibility study, funded by Solihull Council, a design has been created to deal with the uneven paths and provide an attractive relaxation space. The council’s Building Design Group was asked to draw up a scheme that meets the brief to turn the courtyard into a “clean, serene and understated space”.

The partners plan to submit a bid for Heritage Lottery funding to pay for the scheme and have already sent in an expression of interest.

Councillor Joe Tildesley, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism & Sport, said: “The Knowle Society and the Knowle Library team are really excited about the plans for the Courtyard. Now it’s time for all our library users, visitors and local residents to see these draft designs and hopefully get behind the project.

“I do hope people will take the time to look at the designs, leave any feedback they have, but more importantly express their support for the scheme or even get involved. We need to demonstrate local support before we put in a bid.”

Andrew Marston, Chairman of the Knowle Society, said: “We have spent a long time working on these proposals and feel they will not only create an inspiring new space outside the Library to relax, but also allow the wonderful old building to be fully appreciated.

“I hope local people and Library users will get behind the scheme so that we are confident of local support before we submit the final bid to the Heritage Lottery fund.”
