Poppy Appeal launched by Solihull Mayor and Mayoress

This year’s Poppy Appeal Campaign was launched on Monday 9th October by the Mayor and Mayoress of Solihull, Councillor Stuart Davis and Mrs Sarah Walker, at the Solihull war memorial outside St Alphege Church.

Poppies will be on sale around the borough from Thursday 26th October, in the run up to Remembrance Sunday which falls on 12th November.

The Poppy Appeal is the major fundraising campaign run by the Royal British Legion.

Money raised is used to provide financial, emotional and social support to the millions of men and women who have served or are currently serving in the British Armed Forces and their families.

Thanks to everyone’s efforts last year the Solihull Branch of the Royal British Legion was able to raise around £58,900 for the Poppy Appeal Collection.

Hoping to build on this success, they will also be holding a fundraising event on Saturday 4th November in Mell Square – where there will be a display of ex-military vehicles and motorbikes.

The Mayor said: “I am honoured to be involved with the launch of the 2017 Poppy Appeal.

“I would encourage everyone to get involved and show their support and respect to our service men and women who show such bravery and have devoted their lives for the good of the nation.

“I hope that Solihull residents will support this appeal and help raise vital funds for the Royal British Legion.”

Tracey Walker, Chairman of the Solihull Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal said: “I would like to thank the people of Solihull for their generosity over the years and hope that this year’s appeal will raise the vital funds that are needed to help the people who rely on the Royal British Legion for support.

“Each year an increasing number of people approach the Royal British Legion for help and we work tirelessly to ensure that we can offer all the support they and their families need. I would encourage all Silhillians to buy and wear a poppy this year.”

Remembrance Services will be held across the borough on Sunday 12th November.
