Solihull Council issues warning to be cautious of unlicensed bulky waste collectors

Solihull Council is urging residents to make sure they do not pay for bulky waste to be removed from their home by people who are not licensed to do so.

The warning comes following reports of individuals knocking on doors across the borough and offering to remove bulky items such as fridges, freezers or dishwashers – and subsequently, fly tipping them on land nearby.

A SMBC spokesperson said: “Residents are reminded that they have a duty of care in respect of their waste and need to take reasonable steps to check that people removing waste from their premises are authorised to do so.

“Don’t take their word for it – ask to see their waste carrier licence.

“People can easily check a person’s waste carrier licence on the Environment Agency website www.gov.uk/topic/environmental-management/waste – and do so prior to them removing the items.

“Residents can also use the Council’s bulky waste collection service if they need large items removing, which can be booked at www.solihull.gov.uk

“If people experience a cold call or think they have been approached by someone without the appropriate licence, they should record as many details about the individual as possible and call the police on 101 or Consumer Direct on ‪08454 04 05 06‬.

“Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on ‪0800 555 111‬. Always dial ‪999‬ in an emergency.”
