Solihull’s Nutcracker Christmas Trail winners receive iPad prizes

It turned out to be a dream birthday for one of the two lucky winners of Solihull town centre’s first-ever Nutcracker Christmas Trail.

Harry Gardner, from Shirley, found out on his sixth birthday he had won the Trail’s star prize of an iPad, along with Dora Ifrim, who also won one of the must-have gadgets.

Organised by Solihull BID, the trail included 10 Christmas characters hidden around Solihull town centre between 26th November and 6th January.

Those taking part had to collect a trail sheet from one of the participating retailers or information desks at stores and centres such as Touchwood, Joules, Waterstones, Café Isabella and The Ramada Hotel.

They then had to find all the characters and fill out their names. Once complete they posted their sheet into a special post box in Mell Square.

Almost 600 people entered the competition with Harry and Dora’s trail sheets selected at random to take home the iPad prizes.

Harry’s mum Sarah, a part-time policy officer for Birmingham City Council, said: “We really enjoyed the trail and it’s always great to find something to do with the kids over the holidays.

“What a great idea!”

Dora’s mum Mariela said: “It all started as a fun treasure hunt around Solihull. Dora asked her dad to join her finding the Nutcrackers using the leaflet that was distributed in school, which contained a map and directions.

“Once she completed the trail, she decorated the picture of the Nutcracker on the leaflet and posted it at the designated box in Mell Square.

“She was thrilled to learn that she won.”

According to German folklore, nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring good luck. The legend says that a nutcracker guards families from evil spirits and danger.
