Stop checks in Solihull lead to scrap metal man being fined over £600

A Birmingham man has been fined over £600 for overloading his vehicle and transporting waste without a licence.

Solihull Council’s Trading Standards officers stopped Alexandro Varga of Malmesbury Road, Small Heath on 27th April during a multi-agency vehicle check operation at the NEC.

He pleaded guilty at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 8th December to one offence under Section 41 B of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and a second offence under section 1 of the Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989.

Councillor Tony Dicicco, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities & Partnerships, said: “Not only was Mr Varga’s vehicle overloaded with goods which poses significant risk to other road users, he was also carrying scrap metal without holding a valid permit to do so.

“This conviction is the result of successful partnership working across the borough and sends out a clear message that we won’t tolerate people driving unlawfully in Solihull.”

The 61-year-old was fined £160, ordered to pay £30 victim surcharge and contribution costs of £450 – totalling £640.
