Two more Green Flag Awards for Solihull

Two Solihull landmarks have been awarded prestigious accolades marking them amongst the best quality green spaces in the country.

Palmers Rough Recreation Ground and Woodlands Cemetery will now be proudly flying the flag this year after both receiving Green Flag Awards from Keep Britain Tidy – an accolade which is nationally regarded as the Gold Standard for public spaces in the UK.

Councillor Ken Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Environment, Housing and Regeneration said: “To receive the Green Flag for Palmers Rough Recreation Ground is extremely pleasing and one in which we are very proud of.

“We are determined to make our nature reserves welcoming and safe for residents when they visit, and being awarded a Green Flag for Palmers Rough shows our commitment to improving the spaces for the community.”

Councillor Tony Dicicco, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and Partnerships, also commented: “I am extremely proud that Woodlands Cemetery has been honoured with its own Green Flag and that Solihull has now received 14 Green Flag Awards in total.

“I am very happy for Solihull as the staff work extremely hard and put in the effort to make the area look tidy and well-maintained.

“This is a great achievement for the borough and one which the community should feel proud of.”

Green Flag Awards are presented to parks, cemeteries, universities, shopping centres and community gardens after being assessed by more than 700 volunteer experts. Two judges mark each public space against eight strict criteria including horticultural standards, sustainability, cleanliness and community involvement.
